It's not as easy as it looks

What a great workshop we had on June 24th! Presenter Kaye Coppersmith of Wordsworth editing drove up from Tampa to share a morning of learning the art of self-editing. I tried to upload the group photo that was taken but couldn't get it on this blog. Look for it in the next issue of The Florida Writer's fall issue.
Editing is not as easy as it looks. When one has been married to a book in progress for many months, it's easy to overlook mistakes that would normally jump off the page. Keep this in mind if you are currently in the process of finishing a manuscript. It's good advice to put it in a drawer for a couple weeks and take another look at it for minor errors after you've had a chance to get away from the novel for a little while.
Also keep in mind that once you re-edit your work, make sure you haven't repeated the same errors. Slow down. Read slowly. Don't depend on your spell check. Have your Strunk and White by your side and wear out it's pages.
Till next time. Happy writing.
