How to Prepare for a Writers Conference

Whether this years Florida Writers Conference scheduled for October 21-23 is your first or one of many you've previously attended, there are still preparations to be made ahead of time if you want to get the most for your conference investment.

Here are a few hints to help you get started.

1)  Start by perusing the conference brochure you received upon registration.
2)  Cross out what doesn't interest you.
3)  Circle sessions that interest you along with any agents you wish to meet.
4)  Have your business cards with you!  You'll be doing a lot of swapping of cards while at the conference.  Business card tips.  After you've acquired an attendee's business card, take time afterwards to jot down something about that person on the back of the card. e.g.  Has great connections. Wants to meet for lunch.  Or perhaps they write in the same genre you do, etc.  Believe me, after you return home and plow through 30 business cards, you'll be happy you did the above suggested. :)
5)  Write down your goals for this particular conference. - What do you want to learn? Review your goals while you're there.  There will be much to distract you.
6)  Save your conference receipt.  It can be used for income tax filing.
7)  Start practicing your "elevator pitch".  Be ready to describe your novel in one or two sentences.  That's all the time you might have if you happen to talk with an agent while riding the elevator!  Someone once said that luck is preparation to meet an opportunity. Be Ready!

What to Bring to a writers conference.

1) Your manuscript - polished and ready of course.
2)  Business cards
3) Pens/pencils/paper
5)  Proof of conf. registration, ie., canceled check, receipt of registration, etc.

7) Briefcase or book bag.
8) Inquire about any last minute changes in speakers after you've checked into the conference.
9) Checkbook, credit card or cash for buying books, etc. while at the conf.
10) Your patience and sense of humor.  Take time to enjoy yourself in between workshops!
